What the test is
Sutton's shared Stage 1 test, then one Stage 2 paper: Wilson's shares it with Sutton Grammar and Wallington County, so a boy shortlisted by all three sits it once. The school ranks on the Stage 1 test and the two Stage 2 papers in the ratio 1 : 2 : 2, so the maths paper carries twice the weight of Stage 1. Wilson's also offers places on aptitude in football and music, assessed on a day of its own, and you have to ask for that when you register.
How Wilson's School weighs the two stages
The school publishes the weighting. Its rank order uses the stages in the ratio 1 : 2 : 2, which works out as:
- 20% · Stage 1, the Selective Eligibility Test
- 40% · Stage 2, English
- 40% · Stage 2, Maths
So the Stage 2 maths paper on its own is worth twice the whole of Stage 1. The first test is the gate; the second stage is where the ranking is decided.
From the school’s own admissions FAQs, checked on Friday 25 September 2026.
A practice sitting first
The SET Familiarisation Test (FamTest) gives a child the experience of sitting a formal exam in a big hall before the real one. It is run by Wilson's PFA, the school's parents' association and a registered charity, not by the admissions office: sitting it counts for nothing in the application, and missing it costs nothing either.
It is open to children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016, whichever grammar school they are aiming at. Paid, with “unlimited free places available for families who would otherwise be unable to afford these Familiarisation Tests”, asked for in confidence through their contact form.
For the 2026 cycle it ran on Saturday 27 June 2026 and Sunday 28 June 2026, and bookings have closed. The next one is usually announced in the spring. It is worth watching their own page rather than waiting to be told, and we will add the date here once it is published. Checked on Friday 25 September 2026.
From a parent who has been through it
Written by the person who built SillyMaths, whose own son went to this school. It is one family’s experience rather than the school’s current policy, so check anything that matters to you with the school.
- Wilson's has a dedicated lower school for Years 7 and 8, so the youngest boys are not sharing their days with sixth formers. It makes the first year feel smaller than the school actually is.
- Every boy picks a musical instrument in Year 7. It is not optional, though choir counts as the choice. Worth knowing before you arrive rather than in the first week.
- The CCF is one of the things the school is known for, and Wallington High School for Girls takes part in it too.
Where the maths usually goes wrong
Most children preparing for this sit past papers, and a score out of forty tells you how many marks went missing without telling you which eight questions they were, or why. A child can know how to do something perfectly well and still lose the mark because they misread the question, or because they were rushing.
That is what SillyMaths is for. Every skill is asked more than once, in a different form each time, so a slip can be told apart from a gap.
