Keeping children safe

The short version
- There is no chat and no messaging of any kind.
- Nobody can contact your child through SillyMaths, and your child cannot contact anybody.
- We never ask for your child’s real name.
- Your child sees nothing except maths questions and an answer box.
- The account is yours. Your child never has one.
What your child can actually do
Read a question and type an answer. That is the whole of it.
There is no chat window, no help button that reaches a person, no comments, no forum, no profile, no photograph, no video they can post to and nothing they can share. There is no artificial helper for them to talk to. We have deliberately not built any of it, and we are not planning to.
It means there is no route through this website by which a stranger could reach your child. Not a route we monitor carefully — a route that does not exist.
We do not know who your child is
We ask you to give your child a silly name — SparklingTiger, BouncingWalrus — and that is the only name we ever hold. We do not ask for their real name, and we would rather not have it.
We ask for the month and year they were born, never the day, because a child born in August is nearly a year younger than one born the September before and it would be unfair to read their score as if they were the same age. That is the only reason.
If a report ever needs to leave this website — to a tutor, to a teacher — it carries the silly name. You can hand it to a stranger and it identifies nobody.
The account belongs to you
There is no child login. You sign in, and you hand your child the device for the length of a paper. When they finish, they are told to hand it back — and they are never shown a score, because how a result is read is a conversation for you to have, not a number for a child to be handed on their own.
What we hold, and for how long
A silly name, a birth month, and which questions were answered right or wrong. Nothing else about your child. We keep it for two years so you can see whether things have improved, and then it goes.
You can export it or delete it at any point, without asking us and without giving a reason. The privacy policy says exactly how.
If something worries you
Write to hello@sillymaths.com and a person will read it. That includes anything you have seen on this site that you think is wrong, unsafe or badly worded — we would rather know.
If you are worried about a child’s immediate safety, we are not the right people. Contact the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000, or the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
One thing we cannot do. We cannot see your child. We only ever see answers typed into a box. If a paper suggests something is wrong — a child who could do this last month and cannot today — we can show you that, and we will. What it means is something only you can know.
