Running out of time in 11 plus maths — and the child who isn’t actually slow

Near the end of a timed paper, marks start going. It is the most familiar pattern in 11 plus maths and the least useful one, because two completely different children produce it.

The first child is genuinely slow. Not weak — slow. Every question is done properly, the working is neat, and the last five are unattempted because the clock beat them there.

The second child is quick, gets to the end with time to spare, and drops marks on questions they could have done in their sleep. They were finished before they were careful.

Both papers come back with marks missing near the end. Tell the first child to speed up and their accuracy collapses. Tell the second to slow down and nothing happens at all, because they were never trying to go fast — they were trying to be finished.

The score genuinely cannot separate them

This is not a failure of attention on the parent's part. The information is not in the number. A mark is missing; the paper does not record whether it was missing because the clock ran out or because the child was ahead of themselves.

What can separate them is asking the same thing twice.

Every topic paper here is built that way. Each mistake it looks for is asked more than once, and never the same way twice — the same maths in different clothes, some of it unhurried and some of it against a clock.

That is what separates children whose papers look identical at the end:

  • One can do it, and speed took it away.
  • One cannot do it yet, and speed had nothing to do with it.
  • One was tripped by the wording rather than the maths.

A wrong answer under time pressure only means something because the same thing was asked unhurried as well. That comparison is the entire reason we never let a paper get shorter or cleverer by skipping the repeats.

Full marks and still too slow

Here is the part that surprises most parents. A worksheet can come back 8 out of 8 and still be evidence of a timing problem.

We went and counted, on one real child with a long history of practice: of 39 worksheets they had got completely right, nine had taken longer than exam pace. One sheet of eight questions took forty-four minutes. Every one of those nine sheets looked, on the record, like a clean pass.

Nobody was hiding it. It simply was not being measured, because practice at home almost never is. And a child who can only get it right with unlimited time has not yet got it right for an exam that gives them seventy-five seconds a question.

Practice sheets here run at the exam's own pace now — the same seconds per question a mock allows, scaled to the length of the sheet. A grown-up can turn the clock off before handing the device over, which is sometimes exactly the right call. But the default is the pace the real paper sets, because otherwise the sheet is measuring something the exam will not ask.

And a question the clock cut off is not marked as a wrong answer. It is recorded as unanswered — time ran out. Those are different facts and they need different work. Counting them together would tell you a child cannot do something they simply never reached.

What to do with the answer

If the pattern says speed: the maths is already there. What is missing is doing it under a clock, on questions they have already proved they can do untimed. Short, timed, easy is the practice that helps here — and it feels like going backwards, which is why almost nobody does it.

If the pattern says the maths is not there yet: adding a clock makes everything worse. The clock is the last thing to add, not the first.

And if the paper says a child is losing marks on the easy questions at the end while getting harder versions right earlier — that is not a maths finding at all. That is a silly mistake with a name, and it is fixable in a week.

The point is not that one of these children is fine and the other is not. It is that the same five missing marks mean opposite things, and you cannot choose the right week's work until you know which one you are looking at.
